5 Snacks That Are Accidentally Vegan
So you’re thinking about ditching animal products, but you’re worried about never truly being satisfied. I get it—been there. When I first went plant-based, I heard so many misconceptions from concerned friends and family members: “But aren’t you hungry all the time?” “It’s so expensive, though!” “What if you’re just craving junk food?” and my favorite, “What can you eat!?”
What can I eat? A lot, actually. What I’m about to reveal to you just might be the holy grail of “accidentally” vegan snack food. And none of it requires any effort. Going to movie night and need to pick up some vegan-friendly munchies at the last minute? I got you covered.
Ah, potato chips. A junk food staple for herbivores and omnivores alike. Kettle brand is a personal favorite, and you can keep things interesting with all the different flavors they have to offer. Going to a barbecue? With Kettle Backyard Barbeque chips, you can still indulge in some smoky, tangy goodness—minus the meat part. If bacon is the one thing you don’t think you can do without, curb your craving with these Maple Bacon chips, and rest easy knowing no pigs were harmed in the making of this snack. Feeling spicy? Try the jalepeño or my personal favorite, sriracha. I live for all things sriracha. Whatever you’re into, chances are there’s something for you: Pepperoncini, Red Curry, Roasted Garlic, Sea Salt, Sea Salt & Vinegar and Unsalted varieties of Kettle brand chips are all vegan-friendly!
Here’s a chip tip: Always read the label, but remember that most potato chips should be vegan. All you need are some potatoes, vegetable oil and salt! Just look out for any extras like Whey or yogurt in certain varieties.
If you’ve been vegan for awhile, this is old news. If you’re new to the community, you’re welcome. Your sweet tooth never has to suffer because of your plant-based diet. Classic Oreos? Vegan. Golden Oreos? Vegan. Double Stuf? Double Vegan. Bite Size? Vegan Vegan Vegan. Even most of their seasonal and specialty flavors are vegan-safe, like Lemon, Birthday Cake and even Cinnamon Bun. Yes please, and thank you!
Here’s an Oreo hack you have to try: dunk them in a glass of vanilla almond milk or cashew milk. It’ll take you back to your childhood cookie-dunking days, and I think you might just find that dunking them in nut milk is even tastier (and creamier!) than cow’s milk. Yum! Not a milk person at all? Try dunking your Oreos in some orange juice instead. I know, it sounds crazy… but trust me. It tastes like a creamsicle and your taste buds will thank you for it.
Thanks again, Nabisco! Seriously, is it just me or are nutter butters kind of the best thing ever? Lucky for you (and me!) these peanut-shaped gifts from above can stay by your side through your transition to a plant-based lifestyle. What more could you ask for, really? You can’t go wrong with the original Nutter Butter cookies, but if you ever want to mix it up, try the Nutter Butter Creme Patties. They’re a whole new level of magical.
Fruit By The Foot
If you prefer fruity-tasting snacks, you’re in luck. Fruit By The Foot is another classic snack that contains absolutely no animal products! I know what you’re thinking—why would a fruit snack ever contain animal products!? Gummy treats can be tricky because many of them do contain gelatin, which comes from boiling the skin, bones, and cartilage of an animal. No thanks. Beware of the gummy bears, no matter how cute they might seem!
Don’t worry, I’ll share a gummy loophole with you: If you still prefer adorable fruit snacks that can look up at you while you eat them, pick up some Sour Patch Kids instead. These sour-then-sweet treats are gelatin-free!
Minute Maid Frozen Treats
Need to beat the heat, vegan-style? Keep cool with some Minute Maid Frozen Juice Bars in Orange, Cherry or Grape. The texture of these is so perfect—somewhere between popsicle and slushie. This is how I want all of my frozen treats to be! If you’re more of a frozen lemonade person, Minute Maid Soft Frozen Lemonade is to die for, too. No matter what the temperature is outside, these frozen treats are perfectly refreshing. Plus, they come in an awesome squeeze tube to up the fun factor. Win-win.
Have some time on your hands? You can always make your own frozen delicacies, too! Experiment with freezing different combinations of fruit chunks and fruit juices at home, and let us know what your favorite combinations are!
